I got tagged by Ah Pek!

Ah Pek sneakily tagged me while I wasn't looking, together with Helen and LengLui for our Top 5 Movies. Contrary to what Ah Pek thinks, I've not been much of a movie goer in recent years, so my top movies may seem outdated to many.

This is the first time I'm going a meme, and with the internet crawling again (not another earthquake that I didn't know about, is there?) I thought I'd do up something while I have the time. Here are my Top 5 Movies in no particular order.

When Harry Met Sally

I enjoy watching this movie. Must have seen in multiple times, due to the frequency it was repeated on UK tv. Basically a movie about whether men and women can ever be friends when sex comes into the picture. Who can forget the famous scene where Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in a diner over an apple pie, just to prove that women can and do fake it?? I love the lady who goes "I'll have whatever she's having" when she was done. Hilarious.

Farinelli il Castrato

This movie came out when I was in the UK and watching movies in 12 screen cineplexes for the first time. At that time, we still had cinemas here - remember the likes of Rex and Cathay? - so a cineplex was an experience. Farinelli il Castrato is a movie about Carlo Broschi who was a famous castrato in 18th century Italy in the time of Handel, the famous German composer. A castrato is an opera singer who is castrated as a child so as to preserve their angelic voice.

This movie is filmed predominantly in Italian, with parts in English, French and German. The music is gorgeous even if the movie is a tad weird in parts. I loved it so much, I bought the CD soundtrack (one track still makes me want to cry everytime I hear it) and the movie on video but I think I'll have to get the DVD version soon since I don't have a video player anymore.

Indiana Jones - The Temple of Doom

Yes I'm an Indiana Jones fan and this is my favourite of the trilogy. The Raiders of the Lost Ark scared me to death and come to think of it, so did this one. Indiana Jones, archaeologist and adventurer finds himself in India. What makes this one so enjoyable is, I think the participation of the little boy played by Jonathan Ke Quan. The character played by Kate Capshaw just irritated the hell out of me.

The best scenes in my opinion are the one where the cult shaman reaches into the body of a live man to pull out his still beating heart - gory!! - and the dinner scene where they served monkey heads, snakes slithering out of a larger snake and fish eye soup!

Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back

The 2nd installment in the original Star Wars trilogy (for those old enough to remember when there were only 3) or the 5th in the new Star Wars series (for those who thought Star Wars began with a baby Anakin). This is the one where we get introduced to Yoda, whose one liners are now the subject of management seminars the world over "Do or Do Not - There is No Try".

Beautiful Life

This Italian movie directed by and starring Robert Benigni is set in 1930s Italy. Life is fun for Guido who woos and marries a lovely young woman and settles down with a small son. Guido is a happy-go-lucky chap and makes life fun and beautiful for his family. Then Nazi Germany enters Italy and Guido and his family (Jews) are sent to Jewish concentration camp.

Guido and his son are separated from his wife, and in order to help his son survive the camp, Guido pretends that the Holocaust is a game and the prize for winning it is a tank. Thus, the little boy goes through the Holocaust aiming to win a tank, which he ultimately does, kinda in the end. Its a heart warming and touching movie except for the end. I didn't think that Guido should have died the way he did. They were already so close.

Anyway, these are my top 5 movies and to keep this meme going, I'm going to tag Pablopabla, Tine and RyeUrn.

So TAG! You're IT!

Hi Paris, I was delighted when I found another fellow blogger who also appreciates 'Farinelli.' It's such a wonderful film. Unfortunately, not many knows how to enjoy it.

I love the songs/arias too ;) Sometimes I can't help but, wonder how the real Farinelli would sound like. I guess it's just wishfull thinking on my part. Heehehe. So, this digitaly reconstructed singing voice of his in this film is the nearest thing we could ever get.

Btw, I found your site via RyeUrn's post on this meme, and I have already blogrolled you on my site plus, linked this post of yours to mine. Found we do have a few things in common ;) - like coffee and films.
